Guidelines for Submitting a Manuscript Overall Learning Objective Psychiatrists and other physicians who participate in this CME program will bring enhanced insight, an expanded psychiatric skill set, and raised awareness of clinically relevant issues to the diagnostic and treatment challenges that arise in their care of patients with psychiatric disorders. Preparing a Lesson Introduction The introduction of your CME lessons should outline and explicitly state the learning objectives of your lesson. You should present not only the nature of what the reader will learn, (knowledge and information) but also how the content will relate to the reader's practice (clinical insights and authoritative recommendations). Part One The first part of your manuscript generally presents background information, definitions and conceptualizations of key terms, and contextual data regarding the nature of the affected group. Part Two The second part of the manuscript should examine assessment and diagnostic issues and the challenges that arise therein or consists of a review of issues central to a basic understanding of the topic; the third and final part of the body should focus entirely on issues in treatment, or on how the knowledge presented in the lesson translates into proactive interventions that will enhance the reader's practice. The use of case examples, figures, and tables to elucidate diagnostic and treatment issues should occur throughout the body of the piece where applicable. Part Three The third section of the body is where the knowledge that has been presented is translated into opportunities for practical enhancements. Keep in mind that its practice-oriented emphasis is what differentiates a continuing education lesson from a typical journal article. All articles and special reports generally require a summary of key teaching points. In addition to this, if the author feels comfortable drawing conclusions about a given treatment approach or a specific course of action, then a conclusion should be included. When a number of diagnostic and/or treatment approaches have been reviewed and compared or when contentious data have been presented, we want you to make recommendations for the most reliable and effective approaches to diagnosis and/or treatment and to back up such claims in the conclusion. Manuscript Guidelines 1. All lessons should be typewritten, double-spaced, and approximately 16-20 pages or 4000-6000 words long; special reports are are approximately 8-10 pages or 2000-4000 words long (not including the references or study aids at the end of the manuscript). 2. Be sure to include the following author information: a. Complete names of all authors as they should appear in print b. Credentials, current position, name and address of affiliation 3. Use headings and sub-headings throughout the text. Please underline major headings and place a colon [:] after sub-headings. 4. Be sure to cite all references numerically (per AMA style) within the body of the article and list in corresponding order at the end of the article. Please review examples. 1. Ganguli R, Brar JS. Generalizability of first-episode studies in schizophrenia. Schizophr Bull. 1992;18:463-469. 2. Fink M. Electroshock: Restoring the Mind. New York: Oxford University Press; 1999.If you include additional references for study, please separate this list from text references, and list sources alphabetically by author at the end of the lesson. For all references, please do not use the endnote or referencing functions available in word processing programs. 5 . Charts, tables, or other supplemental material are welcome. Please include electronic artwork for complex figures whenever possible. 6. The author is responsible for securing permission to reprint and/or adapt any lines of text, figures, or tables taken from other sources in his or her manuscript. 7. Please send your manuscript as an email attachment. You may save your file in Microsoft Word or in Rich Text Format (rtf). Please send email to editorial@hatherleigh.com. 8. Please attach your curriculum vita with your manuscript or mail. Faculty Disclosure All published authors are required to disclose relationships with pharmaceutical companies if they exist. Those relationships will be printed on the title pages of individual lessons or at the end of the issue. Also, any medications mentioned in a CME lesson or special report that are not approved by the FDA for the indication discussed therein must be listed and will be disclosed appropriately.
